How Do You Know Whom To Trust When Selling Your Jewelry?

Making the decision to sell your fine jewelry, or sell your diamond engagement ring can be difficult. Finding a company you can trust to work with can sometimes make that difficult choice even harder. How do you know whom you can trust, and what the process should look like?

I decided to write this entry based on what has come to become somewhat of a common experience for many clients I speak with. They have come to the decision to sell their jewelry, but have already had an uneasy experience doing so, and have come to find us after attempting to work with other companies. I thought it might be helpful to shed some light on a particular practice that should not be taking place when working with a company to sell your jewelry.

When beginning the process of working with a diamond buying company, many of my recent clients have said that the company did not discuss the potential value of their pieces and simply sent them a label asking them to just send the jewelry off, followed by multiple phone calls and emails asking them to send it.

The problem that I see here is not only is it important to have a mutual understanding of what a company might be willing to pay for your jewelry, but also that clients should never feel pressure to send their pieces without knowing this information first. The bottom line is the process should begin with an open conversation about the jewelry you have, the potential value it has in the market, and what the best way to realize those figures is before sending anything off.

In order to make an educated decision on if a particular company is a good fit for you, it is important to first figure these few things out:

  • What potential value will I receive for my fine diamond jewelry
  • Who completes the evaluation of my jewelry
  • How does shipping work, and is the package insured
  • Are there any fees to get my jewelry back if I decline an offer
  • Will I have a designated representative that will work directly with me through the whole process
  • What reviews are available online about the company, and particularly what do the negative reviews state

Answering these few questions prior to working with a company to sell your fine diamond jewelry, or sell your engagement ring, can mean the difference between a positive experience, and a potential nightmare.
